Looking to keep your car in top shape this winter? Check out these winter car care tips from Anchor Subaru!

There's no denying that we New Englanders are hardy folks. In fact, we pretty much have to be, what with all the snow, sleet, and freezing rain that gets thrown our way every winter. And while folks across Rhode Island are stocking their sheds, garages, and closets with rock salt, snow shovels, and some extra warm parkas, there are a few things that are continually neglected when it comes to preparing for the winter storms ahead. After all, all the rock salt and snow shovels in the world aren't going to get you to work on time if your car won't start the morning after a snowstorm. Luckily, we here at Anchor Subaru have been helping folks get on the road in all-weather, which is why we've put together a helpful list of tips to make sure you and your car are ready for the cold months ahead.

  • Winter Battery Care: Low winter temperatures like those we experience here in Rhode Island can affect the recharging rate of your Subaru vehicle's battery. If you frequently make short trips and use accessories, the battery won't have enough time to charge during transit, so try to avoid that driving style whenever possible.
  • Windshield Wipers: A lot of the snow, slush, and salt on the road will inevitably end up on you windshield, obscuring your vision and leaving deposits. It's good to wash you wipers when you wash your car, but if they're wearing down and leaving streaks, they may be due for a replacement.
  • Winter Tire Care: Winter tires are an absolute necessity here in Rhode Island. In particular, it's important to keep them properly inflated, so make sure to test them with a tire pressure meter when they're cold and you haven't driven recently, as recently used tires will give an inaccurate pressure reading. In addition, test the treads with a penny every 3,000 miles or so. If you can insert the coin upside down into the tread well and still see most or all of Abraham Lincoln's head, it's time to replace those tires.

We hope these winter weather tips are helpful and edifying to you as you traverse the snowy roads of Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts.
